LSB#: 180223DS01
Make: Colt
Model: Agent 1st Issue LW Light Weight Model
Serial Number: 112271LW
Year of Manufacture: 1961 (ProofHouse)
Caliber: .38 Special
Action Type: 6-Shot, Double / Single Action, Swing-Out Fluted Cylinder Revolver
Markings: The left of the barrel is marked “AGENT / 38 SPECIAL CTG.”, the right is marked “COLT’S PT. F.A. MFG. CO. / HARTFORD CONN. U.S.A.” The left side plate has a Rampant Colt logo found again on the right side of the hammer shroud, the left of the frame has a “VP” in triangle at the front of the trigger guard and “O” at the rear. The crane is marked 'LW / 112271' and the crane cut is marked '112271 / LW' with an inspector mark which is incomplete. The inside of each grip panel is marked '271'.
Barrel Length: 2”
Sights / Optics: The front sight is a partially rounded blade with a serrated rear face, fixed to the barrel. The rear sight is a square notch in a “U” channel on top of the frame.
Stock Configuration & Condition: The grips are checkered walnut with gold-colored Colt logo medallions mounted to the round-butt frame. Most of the checkering has dulled, but it is all still present. The right panel appears more light in color, likely from wear. There is a small compression on the bottom edge of the left panel, another on the back edge of the left panel and a line of wear through the checkering at the bottom of the right panel. Most of the gold coloring has worn through on the medallions with more remaining on the left medallion than the right. There are no chips or cracks. The grips rate in about Very Good overall condition.
Type of Finish: Blue with Black Alloy Frame
Finish Originality: Original
Bore Condition: The bore is bright and the rifling is sharp. There is no erosion in the bore.
Overall Condition: This handgun retains about 90% of its finish. The barrel has thinning finish at the muzzle and at the edge of the taper at the rear of the barrel. The frame has thinning at all edges with holster wear at the front-right corner, the bottom of the trigger guard, scattered light marks on the backstrap, topstrap and butt. There are a few very small light marks in the side faces of the frame and sideplate. The cylinder has thinning at all edges, a light turn line which is wider in the lead-in grooves, and very light to light wear behind the flutes. The hammer shroud has a few light marks at edges. The markings are celar. The screw heads are sharp though the rear mount screw for the hammer shroud has most of its finish worn. Overall, this revolver is in about Fine condition.
Mechanics: The action functions correctly. The cylinder produces solid full lockup of all 6 chambers when locked, one chamber consistenly passes the cylinder stop when operated with force. The double action trigger pull is smooth, the single action pull is crisp. We did not fire this handgun. As with all used firearms, a thorough cleaning may be necessary to meet your maintenance requirements.
Box, Paperwork & Accessories: This revolver comes with the installed hammer shroud as described.
Our Assessment: The Colt Agent is similar to the Cobra with a shorter grip frame. This is great for concealed carry as the frame won't print quite so much. This example is in Fine condition and appears to have been carried frequently, but not fired much. Nearly all of the wear to the finish can be attributed to the holster, but the cylinder doesn't have a prominent turn line, the bore is quite nice and the front face of the cylinder is nearly free of burn rings. The Colt marked hammer shroud allows for precise single-action use without the potential for snagging an exposed hammer typically creates. This revolver could serve very well returning to the role of concealed carry, or it would make a nice addition to a revolver or Colt collection. Please see our photos and good luck!
