Greetings...
I have a Walther PP for sale, and I have a guy who wants to buy it, but he won't buy it unless I can prove that it is war time. Pistols are not my strong point, so I need help dating this pistol. It is a standard PP, there are no markings on it except for the serial number and maker code. It has a rough war finish, and there is no Walther legend on the left side. The number is 389337 P, and directly below it is the AC maker code. I can find no prood marks anywhere on the gun.
Any help that can be offered would be greatly welcomed.
WWII P-38's were made in 10,000 gun 'blocks'. Each block was given a block letter code in addition to the serial number. The first block made in January of the year would have the serial number and markings: ac 43 0001. The block would run up to 9999. At that point the numbers would start over at 0001 but an 'a' was added: 0001 a. Walther used serial numbers ranging from 1 to 10,000. The firm started over at 1 when the number 10,000 was reached. To ensure that every pistol had a unique serial number, the Germans added a suffix letter. The letter went up one character each time the serial number once more started at 1.
Markings On Walther P38
- The top values run from the Walther, then the Mauser and lastly the Spreewerke. From what I'm seeing, yours should run between $550 to $650. If you had a matching serial numbered mag it would add another $100 to $150.
- Trying to confirm a serial number on a Walther P38 '4xxx l' on the frame '4xxx l ac44' on the slide I read on the internet that the ac44 was a designation code and 44 was the year of manufacture.
- Spreewerk P.38 Date/Serial Help I just recently bought a P.38 pistol that I was hoping to get some guidance on, as I am fairly new to the P.38 scene. It is marked 'cyq,' which I have easily determined to be of Spreewerk origin from some basic research on the internet.
